How to Pick Blueberries & Blackberries
Look for ripe berries:
- Blueberries: Should be a plump, deep blue color with a slight whitish waxy coating. Avoid berries that are red, green, or mushy.
- Blackberries: Should be completely black and plump, but not mushy. Avoid any berries that are red or green.
Gently pick the berries: Hold the berry by the stem and gently twist or pull it off the bush. Don’t yank or squeeze the berry. This can damage the plant and fruit.
Use a shallow container: A basket is ideal. Don’t use deep containers because the berries on the bottom tend to get crushed.
Pick throughout the bush: Don’t just grab the berries at eye level. Ripe berries can be hidden throughout the bush.
Respect the farm: Only pick the berries you intend to purchase and stay within the designated picking areas.
If it’s your first time picking or you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask the farm staff for help.
