Blackberry plants are quicker to mature than blueberries. We
will have a full crop in 2007. Our new trellis will make
picking much easier this year.
We have two varieties of blackberries, Apache (thornless) and
Chickasaw (thorned). The Chickasaw are the first to ripen,
around June 1, sometimes earlier. The Apaches ripen a few
weeks later. To make up for its thorns the Chickasaw produces
a massive berry. Both are delicious either fresh or in
cobblers or other cooked dishes. I personally like them
fresh, chilled, with a little cream.
Soon this will be a
juicy, ripe Chickasaw blackberry!
This is our new trellis system. Much easier picking
in 2007.
